RESEARCH FRAMEWORK FOR THE STUDY OF ROMAN POTTERY IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND 1997

Edited by Suzanne Huson on behalf of The Study Group for Roman Pottery, Southern Regional Group October 1997; selectively revised 2002

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Geographical Area

The present area of the Southern England Regional Group incorporates London and its hinterland (some of south Essex, Middlesex etc.), Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, south Berkshire and east Wiltshire. There have been some suggestions that divisions within the region would be better made on a tribal basis, rather than modern county boundaries. This might work well for Kent, but in most other areas of the region the tribal boundaries seem vague and we do not know for sure where the civitas boundaries lay. A more meaningful division might be on a geographical basis.
